How This Project Came About

Giving Children a Chance for Better Future and Creating a Better World for All...
By Bruce Warren

three classrooms

Here is a photo of RBA Sabulao School Principal Joselito Maslog standing in front of three attached classrooms for grades one, two and three. Thanks to the generous donations received since June, 2008 water, electricity and fans have now been installed.

In March of 2008, I found myself boarding a plane in San Francisco’s international airport headed to the Philippines to see a friend in Kidapawan City on the southern island of Mindanao. It was a trip that would ultimately change my life.

In my first visit to the Philippines, I had no idea what to expect, but found so many friendly and generous people. I was invited to attend the year-end graduation ceremony at a rural primary school outside of Kidapawan City, by Principal Joselito Maslog.

RBA Students ready to learn in partically built classroom

The Ray Buenaventura A. Sabulao Memorial School is similar to many rural schools in the Philippines, meaning they do NOT get enough government aid for buildings or supplies. In this case, the school currently lacks classrooms for grades five and six and a sufficient number of textbooks. In fact, the school would not even exist if Ray Sabulao’s parents had not donated funds to build the school, as a memorial to their son.

After watching the students receive awards not only for academics, but for character traits such as “Most Honest,” and “Most Giving,” I found my heart melting from the kindness and generosity of these simple, humble people, who had “the American,” sitting in the front row like some kind of dignitary.

Near the end of the ceremony, the students performed some traditional dances and the young girls wore the most beautiful dresses with floral prints. Later, one of the teachers told me that the students made the dresses themselves, just for this ceremony.

Guest speaker Clara Icdang gave an inspirational speech to the children on the value of education. It surprised me that she talked openly about how God could always find a way for those who are determined to succeed. Icdang talked about how every mother has hopes for her children to have a better life some day. She described how mothers will find the best clothes they can for their children and iron them, and prepare them for the school day.

What she did not mention is that 60 percent of these students live in bamboo huts beside the highway. These are financially poor families that do not own property. These young and enthusiastic children can benefit greatly from even the smallest donations. $5 helps with even the most basic supplies such as paper, pencils and backpacks.

Recent Graduation Ceremony for the Children

$8,000 - will build one classroom
$50 - purchases 7 textbooks
$30 - 2 fans
$15 - 2 textbooks
$10 - 3 student backpacks
$5 - pencils, erasers, paper

When I first toured the school in March I noticed there were no electric fans as in other area primary schools. I learned this was because RBA Sabulao School did not have electricity yet. Through the generation donations received since that time water and electricity have now been installed in the classrooms.

All of this has happened with less than $700 in donations and there is still a lot to be accomplished. Principal Joselito, teachers and parents are immensely grateful for all the generous donations given thus far, and remain inspired that further donations will assist them in reaching their goals of providing textbooks for more than 100 students and completing construction on the grade five classroom. Another $8,000 to $10,000 in donations would go toward building a classroom for grade six.

How to Help!!!

First send a donation of any amount (even if we simply gather up our loose change and send that to these children it would go a long way toward purchasing more of the 100 plus much needed text books.

Currently, there is no administrative staff for this effort, which means that every penny you donate will go directly to support the RBA Sabulao School. Here’s what your donation can do: Unpacking some new books for the students

$50 - purchases 7 textbooks
$30 - 4 textbooks or 9 student backpacks
$15 - 2 textbooks
$10 - 3 student backpacks
$5 - pencils, erasers, paper

Second pass this on to others who might be willing to send either a small or large donation.

Thank you so much! Salamat! Bruce

Principal at RBA Sabulao School

Principal Joselito Maslog sits in his office in a room that has no computer, files or shelves. For Maslog and his staff of three teachers, teaching is a vocation, a calling to serves the mostly indigenous 147 students of this school, who are indigenous people, who would benefit from even the simplest supplies such as pencils, paper and backpacks.
